The Province of Alberta awarded the North West Anthony Henday project to North West Connect in 2008. This P3 contract is the biggest capital project ever undertaken by Alberta Transportation, valued at $1.42 Billion. The project commenced in the Fall of 2008 and is scheduled to be completed by the Fall of 2011. This 21km freeway is being graded for the ultimate 10 lanes, and will be paved for 6 lanes on the west section to Campbell Road and 4 lanes from there to Manning Drive. Traffic flow will be much improved by the freeway standard used for design of this major corridor that includes eight interchanges and five flyovers, with a total of 29 bridge structures. Design of this major project is managed by AECOM Edmonton Office.
The presentation will address the project from the designer’s perspective, discuss geotechnical challenges and innovations AECOM and their geotechnical sub consultant, EBA Engineering, have had to address, and provide an overview of the current construction status.
