The Geotechnical Society of Edmonton will host the 9th Annual One Day Symposium on May 3, 2006, at the Snow Valley Ski complex in southwest Edmonton. The theme for this year's symposium is Ground Improvement.

One of the main challenges of geotechnical work is to improve ground condition to allow for the construction of new buildings, roadways, and improvement of slope stability. Despite being part of the routine work in the geotechnical field, ground improvement technology has advanced and new material, equipment, and techniques have been developed to overcome difficult ground conditions. The aim of this symposium is to share experience in ground improvement in an efficient and enjoyable way.

This year's keynote address will be delivered by Dr. Kerry Rowe: Vice-Principal (Research) Queen's University, Professor, GeoEngineering Centre at Queen's-RMC Kingston, Ontario, Canada of Queen's University. Dr. Rowe was president of the Canadian Geotechnical Society for the year 2001-2002. His presentation will be on "Geosynthetic - reinforced embankments over soft foundations".

Speakers and topics include:
Robert Barrett (Soil Nail Launcher Inc.) "Shallow Slide Analyses and Repair with Launched Soil Nails"
John Kerr (Tensar) "Geosynthetic Reinforcement of Road Over Soft Ground"
Robin Tweedie (Thurber) "Dynamic Compaction of Clay Backfill in a Former Gravel Pit for a Tank Farm"
David Woeller (ConeTec) "Evaluating Ground Improvement Using In Situ Tests"
Junwen Yang (U of A) "Application of Dynamic Consolidation into Jinan Airport Expansion Project"
