Site C was initially designed by the beginning of the 1980s after an intensive investigation of the clay shale foundation. The design consisted of a main earthfill dam approximately 1,050 metres long and 60 metres high above the riverbed. The facility will have a generating capacity of approximately 1100 MW. The project is currently under construction. The findings from the original investigations will be reviewed, and the impact of bedding planes and stress release fractures on the design discussed.

Dr. C. Derek Martin, Ph.D., P.Eng., P.Geol., started his career in 1972 and has over 40 years of experience in geotechnical engineering and the geohazards associated with tunnels, dams and landslides. His early years were spent on construction sites for major hydroelectric and underground projects. In 1987, he joined AECL, where he directed the geomechanics research at the Underground Research Laboratory in southeastern Manitoba and was senior adviser to the Director of the Canadian Nuclear Fuel Waste Management Program. From 1995-1999 he served as Associate Director of the Geomechanics Research Centre at Laurentian University, working on the deep mining projects in the Sudbury basin. Since 2000, Dr. Martin has been Professor in Geotechnical Engineering at the University of Alberta where he holds an NSERC Industrial Research Chair. He served as ISRM Vice-President for North America between 2007-2011. Dr. Martin is a Fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada and a Fellow of The Canadian Academy of Engineering
